Riding the Waves: Active COCO at the 32nd Annual Menehune Surf Contest

Just because the calendar says October doesn’t mean the surf season is over! Last weekend, Active COCO had the incredible honor of being one of the sponsors for the 32nd Annual Menehune Surf Contest at La Jolla Shores, and it was nothing short of spectacular. From the moment the sun rose over the horizon, the day promised—and delivered—perfect bluebird skies and waves that could only be described as epic. Announcers kept praising the ideal surf conditions as young surfers took to the water with skill, style, and infectious enthusiasm.

A Storied Surf Tradition

The Menehune Surf Contest has a rich history that dates back to 1965, making it one of Southern California’s longest-running surf competitions for young athletes. The event was founded by the legendary WindanSea Surf Club to provide a stage for surfers 12 and under at a time when surf contests were rare, and longboards were the only ride.

Through its 50+ years, the Menehune Contest has not only launched surf legends but has also encouraged activism, community engagement, and a love of the ocean in generations of young surfers.

The 2025 Contest: A Celebration of Talent and Fun

This year, surfers 16 and under competed across Longboard and Shortboard divisions, with boys and girls showcasing extraordinary talent. From smooth carves to aerial tricks, it was clear that the future of surfing is bright. Active COCO loved seeing these young athletes embrace the sport with such passion and energy, and we were thrilled to support them as a sponsor of this iconic event.

The morning was filled with cheers, high-fives, and the kind of camaraderie that only a shared love of the ocean can create. The Menehune Surf Contest remains a shining example of how Southern California’s surf culture celebrates youth, skill, and the joy of riding waves—proof that the surf community continues to pass the torch to the next generation, just as it has for decades.

Here’s to the surfers of today and tomorrow—and to keeping the aloha spirt alive, no matter the season!
